You pick up your new glasses, put them on, and something feels off. The floor looks curved, objects seem a little smaller or bigger, or your eyes feel tired by evening. This is a very common experience, and it usually settles on its own. Here's why it happens and when you should get your glasses checked.

Why new glasses can feel different

  • A change in power. Your eyes and brain are used to the old correction. Even a small change takes some getting used to.
  • New astigmatism correction (CYL/AXIS). This can make straight lines or floors appear slightly tilted or curved at first.
  • A different frame shape or size. Larger lenses, a different curve, or lenses sitting at a different distance from your eyes all change what you see at the edges.
  • Your first progressives, which have a learning curve of their own.

How long does adjusting take?

For most people it takes from a few days up to around a week or two. It helps to:

  • Wear the new glasses consistently, and avoid switching back to your old pair.
  • Start by wearing them at home before driving or long screen sessions.
  • For progressives, turn your head to look at things rather than just moving your eyes.

When to get your glasses checked

Go back to your optician if:

  • Blurriness, headaches or dizziness don't improve after a week or two.
  • One eye feels noticeably different from the other.
  • The glasses sit crooked, slip down, or press behind your ears.
  • Your old glasses suddenly feel much clearer than the new ones.

Any of these can mean the lenses need re-checking against the prescription, the PD needs re-measuring, or the frame needs an adjustment. And if your vision changes suddenly, or you have eye pain, see an eye doctor promptly. That isn't an adjustment issue.
